About Seleneca

Take a Virtual Walk down 10th street to Central Park:

About Seleneca

Seleneca is a lunar city state, governed by no Terran nation, yet frequented by all. Seleneca has her own democratically elected government that maintains facilities and utilities, provides security, and through her judicial system enforces her laws.  Given her small size, her management is much like a village or small town back on Earth.  The government is administered by a Mayor, who is elected by the permanent population.  There are two Commissioners, elected at large.  All actions require 100% approval of the Board of Commissioners; however, the Mayor is given daily management responsibilities plus specific emergency liberties with regard to Human, Animal and Plant life safety.

The City was founded on July 20, 2069 by the Seleneca Company, held by an international group of investors and lunar pioneers who are referred to as the Founders.  The Seleneca Charter of 2069 continues to serve as the City’s legal constitution.  Without the commercialization of electrical power by nuclear fusion, Seleneca and other lunar cities and bases would never have been possible.

Seleneca, the physical combined structure, is still under construction.  We are currently built out to about 70 percent of our projected population that will vary between 8,000 and 10,000 persons.  About 25 percent of our current population is tourists who typically stay from two weeks to 6 months; 40 percent full-time residents who work to maintain the city’s management, facilities and food production or who work for local service businesses, and 35 percent who are employed as managers, researchers, or laborers by various private corporations who operate in and around Seleneca.  Major industries include power generation, propellant supply, construction materials, food production, and tourism. Many ask why not water supply, but the base of those operations is located 700 kilometers to the north, in the northern polar region.  Some water is harvested locally, but usually as a byproduct of different processes.

Seleneca is situated along the prime meridian of the moon, the centerline from pole to pole that runs down the middle of the near-side hemisphere, visible from Earth, at the Northern 62nd parallel line of latitude.  Just to the north is the large crater, Timaeus that measures 33 km across and 2.2 km deep.  The crater was named for Timaeus of Locri, a character in two of Plato’s dialogues, Timaeus and Critias.  According to Wikipedia, he appears as a philosopher of the Pythagorean school (of thought/beliefs) and there is no evidence that he was ever a living person.

Seleneca operates on the Earth based Gregorian Calendar, with 12 months, 365 days a year, plus a leap-year every 4 years.  We use the same 24-hour clock, synced to UTC±00:00.  Our days and nights are regulated with changes to our artificial lighting, whether or not we have sunlight outside.  During nighttime hours, the luminosity of our street lighting and public courtyards is lowered.  The dimming and subsequent brightening is gradual over a 2o-minute span each day as on earth.

Seleneca has its own currency used throughout the lunar settlements and corporate stations, called the Selenic, using the symbol Σ which is based on the Greek letter Sigma with a horizontal line crossing through it. This is a cryptocurrency, exchanged by our various digital devices.

About this Website

We hope you will enjoy this fantasy, since many of us in the early part of the 21st Century will never get to go to the Moon in our lifetimes.  This site is a work in progress.  The intent is to show what life could be like on the moon, not in a “tin can” but as a whole community. All ideas are based on current knowledge of the constraints and opportunities from a science basis.  Comments are welcome from members of the science and space exploration communities if something seems implausible.

Our Code of Being

  1. Remember that everyone was born into our solar system in the same manner. Everyone must be treated equally and fairly and with the same respect.
  2. Everyone is entitled to privacy within their own personal living spaces.
  3. One individual’s dangerous behavior is a risk to the lives of all. Everyone is required to pay attention to look for signs of that risk in themselves and others.
  4. No one has the right to inflict physical or mental harm to another.
  5. Acknowledge that we humans have emotions and they trigger conflicts.  We must stay aware of our own emotions and the feelings of those around us.
  6. Everyone must accept that some humans unknowingly do things that annoy other humans.  When confronted by someone who is annoying you, acknowledge it, mention it, and if it doesn’t stop, accept it as part of who that person is.  Then declare to yourself that that is all that it is, and carry on.
  7. Acknowledge that everyone has strengths and weaknesses and for the sake of progress, allow the collective strengths to combine to move forward.
  8. Extract positive lessons from any past negative experiences; do not let them repeat.  Coming to Seleneca is often cited as a way “to start over.” You must pack light to come here; do the same with your emotional baggage as well.
  9. Do not attack or challenge someone’s faith or belief system because it is the same as attacking them.  One’s faith is part of his, hers, or their personal recipe for success in life.
  10. Do not use your own faith or belief system as a justification to harm others.
  11. Any perception of harm is defined by the recipient, not by the accused aggressor.  Let the judge or mediator decide on punishment or steps to resolution.
  12. Each day, do not forget to pause, look around, and marvel at the joy and accomplishments of others around you and those that came before you.
