MOLTEN, LACUS MORTIS
Chico Tedira

is a Selenic Times Investigative Reporter.

One of the oldest buildings in Molten during the early hours this morning collapsed. 152 people feared dead, killed while they slept. Last week, a transit shaft collapsed killing 36 people in route during what was a typical day for them. “This settlement has reached the end of its physical life. We really need help!” cries out Jimmy Hatch, an elected official who appears to be at his wits end.

Molten, formerly called Mole Town, is located about 648 km (403 miles) southeast of Seleneca at Lacus Mortis and one of the Moon’s very first settlements. The location was first explored by numerous Teran companies robotically as far back as 2022, and later became one of the very first human settlements on the moon, and the first to located within a lava tube. There are not many humans between here and there, and it has always been somewhat of a remote location. The mining operations that once flourished there have since moved to locations with greater resources, causing the community to deal with hard times for decades now. With so little resources, almost no reinvestment in infrastructure has been carried out. Like Seleneca, they operate as an independent state. They were once controlled by the United States of America but were given independence without any say in the matter when the major mining corporations left town.

Community Leaders are asking for help. Last year, the local government hired 3 local engineers to perform a survey of public infrastructure. Their findings were that the community’s infrastructure was both dangerously overstretched and lagging behind all other lunar settlements. The elected officials have offered numerous proposals for repairs, but their broken financial system cannot deliver the needed funds. They are seeking strategies by way of public-private partnerships and establishing an infrastructure bank, to be funded by taxes and private contributions. Contact Seleneca’s Office of Emergencies to find out how you might help, as they are strategizing ways to offer aid. Comm link: Seleneca Emergency Office.

Our Code of Being

  1. Remember that everyone was born into our solar system in the same manner. Everyone must be treated equally and fairly and with the same respect.
  2. Everyone is entitled to privacy within their own personal living spaces.
  3. One individual’s dangerous behavior is a risk to the lives of all. Everyone is required to pay attention to look for signs of that risk in themselves and others.
  4. No one has the right to inflict physical or mental harm to another.
  5. Acknowledge that we humans have emotions and they trigger conflicts.  We must stay aware of our own emotions and the feelings of those around us.
  6. Everyone must accept that some humans unknowingly do things that annoy other humans.  When confronted by someone who is annoying you, acknowledge it, mention it, and if it doesn’t stop, accept it as part of who that person is.  Then declare to yourself that that is all that it is, and carry on.
  7. Acknowledge that everyone has strengths and weaknesses and for the sake of progress, allow the collective strengths to combine to move forward.
  8. Extract positive lessons from any past negative experiences; do not let them repeat.  Coming to Seleneca is often cited as a way “to start over.” You must pack light to come here; do the same with your emotional baggage as well.
  9. Do not attack or challenge someone’s faith or belief system because it is the same as attacking them.  One’s faith is part of his, hers, or their personal recipe for success in life.
  10. Do not use your own faith or belief system as a justification to harm others.
  11. Any perception of harm is defined by the recipient, not by the accused aggressor.  Let the judge or mediator decide on punishment or steps to resolution.
  12. Each day, do not forget to pause, look around, and marvel at the joy and accomplishments of others around you and those that came before you.
